A trip to Meteora offers the unique opportunity to admire the greatness of nature combined with history, architecture and our eternal desire to connect with God. It is a sacred place for all Christians in the world.
There aren't enough words to describe such a stunning place. Meteora is a spiritual land that will inspire and amaze every visitor.
It is the ideal place to achieve absolute isolation in order to support the need of man for spiritual elevation. Huge dark rocks support the foundations of the monasteries, creating the second best monastic complex in Greece, next to Agion Oros.
Monks were isolated from the world 1,000 years ago, crossing land and sea, climbing up the steep and high mountains. They devoted their lives to God by growing a monastic community on the giant rocks.
In 1920, stairs and tunnels were carved into the rocks, making the monasteries accessible. The difficult and dangerous traditional method of communication and refueling of monks with ladders, ropes, pulleys and baskets was gradually abandoned.
Today, out of the 24 monasteries, only six operate, while the rest are uninhabited or in ruins. The monasteries in operation are Metamorphosis, St. Stephen, Varlaam, St. Nicholas of Anapa, Rousanou and of Holy Trinity.
