Just 1.5 hours away from Athens, a destination that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Non other than Nafplio, the traditional settlement with the historic Palamidi and Bourtzi. The enchanting Nafplio will charm you and you will want to explore every corner of the island. It was the first capital of Greece, from 1823 to 1834. While according to Greek Mythology, it is the creation of the son of Poseidon and Animonis, after whom the city was named. Venetians, Franks and Turks passed from this small town and left their mark.

Crossing the narrow streets, one of the most central points, we find Syntagma Square. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, such as the National Bank, Trianon and the Archaeological Museum. Nearby, outside the church of Saint Spyridon, Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, was murdered. There are many places to visit, you can learn the history of the komboloi at the Museum of Komboloi, visit the War Museum, the Kolokotroni Park and the Gate of the Land.

Above the city stands Palamidi Castle, with its own historical past. Climb the so called 999 steps and find yourself in the chapel of Ag. Andreas, with the best view of the city and the sea. Trademark of Nafplion, Bourtzi, easily accessible by boat. In the old days it prevented enemy ships from entering the city, with a thick chain linking it with Akronafplia. Bourtzi hosted the executioners, who ended the life of the prisoners on death row of Palamidi. It is now a piece of the past, an attraction for memory photos, and a place for cultural events.

In Nafplio you will find everything, small tourist shops for souvenirs, cafes, clubs and traditional taverns. A tourist train ride will entertain you, also do not forget to stop at one of its famous shops for a sweet or ice cream. A lovely idea is to walk the Arvanitia road, it offers a quiet and piecefull moments by the seaside.

In the summer months you can enjoy the beaches of Arvanitia, Karathonas and Kios. Also, Tolo is close by, with organized beach, camping and nightlife.

A two day stay is enough to get to know Nafplion, to fall in love with it and to be eager to visit it again.
