Information

The building complex of Saint Dionysius consists of the Temple of the Patron of Zakynthos, the belfry - campanile, the Holy Monastery of Strofades and Saint Dionysius and the new ecclesiastical Museum - Sacristy.

The church of the Patron of the island is the largest that exists in the city. Today's magnificent Temple and the adjacent Monastery of Ammos experienced several phases. They were destroyed during the great earthquake that desolated Zakynthos in 1893. A special Fundraiser Committee of 1900 undertook the construction of a new temple; the foundation of the present temple began in 1925 and its inauguration took place on August 22, 1948. The temple was built by architect’s A Orlandos designs in a three-aisled basilica style. Thanks to its anti-seismic construction, it was one of the few buildings that did not collapse from the devastating earthquake of 1953. The small damage that it suffered was corrected and in 1948 the temple was renovated; since then it presents its current form.

As for the tower-like belfry of the Temple that harmoniously makes up the building complex of the monastery, it should be noted that, it also experienced various phases because of the intense seismicity of the area. The current one, was built, magnificent and expressive of the Zakynthian peculiarity, after the earthquake and fire of August 1953, about 40 meters high, with a pyramidal peak, which, with its sweet-sound bells, blares in every direction the ceaseless presence of the Zakynthian Patron Saint in that blessed holy roof, epicenter and reference point of the spiritual life of the island. If we observe its belfry, we will find many similarities with the belfry of Saint Mark of Venice.

The temple houses the relic of Saint Dionysius, where, besides a source of power for the locals, it is also a major attraction for many visitors. The feast of Saint Dionysius takes place twice a year and lasts for three days at a time. On August 24, is honored the memory of the Carriage of the Holy Relic from the Strofades Islands to Zakynthos (1717), and on 17 December is honored the memory of his Decease (1622). The festal events peak with the offertory of the holy relic around the entire city of Zakynthos.

The most important and most precious work of art of the church, is the silver sculpture Larnaca, which houses the holy relic, a work of George Diamantis Mpafas, which was crafted in 1829. Stand out, the Despotic icons in the Iconostasis with silver covering from the same artist (1829), and the representation of the litany, that is located in the women's room, by the hand of the priest Nicholas Koutouzis.

A great work constitutes the wood-carved iconostasis preserved by the earthquake of 1953, which, together with the marvelous frescoes of Koutouzis and Doxaras, give the temple the imposing shape that befits it. Most frescoes show icons of the Saint's life. Impressive is also the wood-carved and gold-plated “Room” of the Saint.
